- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.36](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1993.1.36)

> Ascending the hall, he said: "The Way does not rely on cultivation; merely do not defile it. Chan does not rely on study; what is valued is setting the mind at rest. Because the mind is at rest, mind after mind is free of deliberation; because there is no cultivation, step after step is the bodhimaṇḍa. Free of deliberation, there are no three realms to leave; without cultivation, there is no bodhi to seek. Not leaving and not seeking—this is still the talk of the doctrinal vehicles. If you are patch-robed monks, what should you do?" After a long pause, he said: "The bodhisattva has no head and emptily clasps his palms; the vajra-deva has no feet and vainly opens his fists." He descended from the seat.
