> Ascending the hall, he cited: "Great Master Yongjia said: 'Roaming rivers and oceans, crossing mountains and rivers, / Seeking teachers and asking after the Way in order to investigate Chan. / Ever since recognizing the road of Caoxi, / I thoroughly know that birth and death are of no concern.' Venerable elders! Which are the mountains and rivers roamed? Who is the teacher sought? What is the Chan investigated? What is the Way asked after? Going to Huainan, the two Zhes, Mount Lu, and the Southern Peak, seeking teachers and asking after the Way from Yunmen and Linji, and investigating Chan from Dongshan and Fayan—this is seeking outward, and is called heterodoxy. If you take the self-nature of Vairocana as the ocean and the quiescent wisdom of prajñā as Chan, it is called seeking inward. If you seek outward, it will run you to death; if you dwell within the five aggregates and seek inward, it will bind you to death. Therefore, Chan is neither internal nor external, neither existent nor nonexistent, neither real nor unreal. Have you not seen it said: 'Internal views and external views are both mistakes; the Buddha way and the māra way are both evil.' In a flash, going on like this—the moon sets on the western mountain! If you further seek sound and form, where can it be named and depicted?" Striking the Chan seat with the fly-whisk, he descended from the seat.
