> Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] cited: "Yunmen offered the phrase: 'The ancient Buddha mingles with the exposed pillar—which dynamic is this?' He substituted the answer himself: 'Clouds rise on South Mountain, rain falls on North Mountain.'" The Master said: "Such a great master Yunmen turns out to be faint-hearted. Simian says: 'The ancient Buddha mingles with the exposed pillar—this is the fourth dynamic.'" After a long pause, he then said: "This talk has skin on its face three inches thick; uttering words, it turns insolent. It would be good to take Linji's staff and give it three beatings a day. But who can lay a hand to it? Although the offense fills the sky, a new amnesty releases all."
