> Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] cited: "A monk asked Dongshan: 'What is the eye of a kalyāṇamitra?' Dongshan said: 'A paper twist with no oil.'" The Master said: "It is not that old fellow Dongshan did not have it; he was merely too frugal. If someone were suddenly to ask Simian, 'What is the eye of a kalyāṇamitra?' I would only say to him: 'Blind.' Why? Only to match him." Then he said: "A paper twist without oil is indeed quite wondrous, / Unfit to be picked up—who understands? / Turning around, he remembers the road he came by; / Under the moon, surging along, he returns wherever his feet lead."
