> One day, occasioned by an incident, the Master brought up: "Formerly, an elder did not speak for the monks during an entire summer retreat. A monk sighed to himself, saying: 'I have passed this whole summer retreat in vain like this; I did not expect the Upādhyāya to speak of the Buddhadharma, but it would have been enough just to hear the two words "correct cause".' The elder overheard and said: 'Ācārya, do not be rash; if one speaks of the correct cause, there is not even a single word.' Having spoken thus, he clicked his teeth and said: 'Just now, I spoke like that for no reason.' An elder on the other side of the wall heard this and said: 'A fine pot of soup, defiled by two pieces of rat dung.'" The Master commented: "Whose pot does not have one or two pieces?"
