> Ascending the hall, he brought up: "Jingqing asked a monk: 'Where have you recently left?' The monk said: 'Stone Bridge.' Qing said: 'How is the fundamental matter?' The monk said: 'I have recently left Stone Bridge.' Qing said: 'I don't care about your Stone Bridge; how is the fundamental matter?' The monk said: 'Why does the upādhyāya not accept my words?' Qing then struck him. The monk said: 'My words still stand.' Qing said: 'Just take the stick; I want the conversation to proceed.'" The Master said: "Even though this is relying on power to bully another, yet conditions do not arise in isolation. If this monk had been able to be prudent at the beginning and safeguard the end, the stick would have had to be taken by Jingqing himself."
