> He brought up: "Nanquan instructed the assembly, saying: 'The Way is not outside things; outside things is not the Way.' Zhaozhou came forward and asked, 'What is the Way outside things?' Nanquan struck him. Zhou said, 'Upādhyāya, do not strike me; hereafter you will wrongly strike people.' Quan said, 'Dragons and snakes are easy to discern, but patch-robed monks are difficult to deceive.'" The Master said, "Zhaozhou was like a dragon without horns, like a snake with feet. At that time, had \[Nanquan\] paid him no heed—when the law is applied to the utmost, no subjects remain—he should simply have driven him out after thrashing him with the stick."
