- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [3.31](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1996.3.31)

> He cited: "Upādhyāya Benren addressed the assembly, saying: 'Usually I do not wish to manipulate other people's sons and daughters before sound and after phrase. Why is this? Furthermore, sound is not sound, and form is not form.' At that time a monk asked, 'How is it that sound is not sound?' Ren said, 'Can it be called form?' \[The monk\] said, 'How is it that form is not form?' Ren said, 'Can it be called sound?' The monk bowed. Ren said, 'Now tell me: did I explain for you, or did I answer your words? If someone can discern this, they have an entry point.'" The Master said, "Benren was also quite extraordinary; yet coveting a look at the heavens, since it is not 'before sound and after phrase,' just how does one enter?"
