> He cited: "Yantou visited Deshan. Striding across the threshold, he asked at once, 'Is it common or sacred?' Deshan gave a shout; Yantou bowed. Dongshan heard of this, cited it, and said, 'Were it not for master Huo, it would have been vastly difficult to take on.' Yantou said, 'Old man Dongshan does not recognize good from bad; at that time, with one hand I lifted and with one hand I suppressed.'" The Master said, "Be that as it may, under Deshan's gate the grass bends with the wind, yet after all it cannot stop people's mouths. At that time, as soon as he bowed, he should have struck him across the back: not only cutting off Dongshan, but also subduing old Huo. Do you understand? 'General Li has a splendid reputation, / but failing to be enfiefed as a marquis, it is also in vain.'"
