> Whenever Juzhi saw a monk arrive or answered an inquiry, he only raised a single finger; for he penetrated from top to bottom and matched realization without a doubt, curing sickness without relying on medicines borne by donkeys and camels. Later generations, not understanding the provenance, routinely raise a finger as well, deceiving others without distinguishing black from white—greatly resembling someone turning ghee into poison, which is truly lamentable. If one has genuinely seen through to the bottom, only then does one know the gravity \[of it\] and never treat it as ordinary. As the saying goes, 'A crossbow of thirty thousand catties does not release its trigger for a field mouse.' Therefore, one must possess the eye on the crown of the head before one may take part. Later, Xuansha critiqued it, saying: 'Juzhi's point of undertaking was crude; he only recognized a single dynamic and a single realm.' There are those who blunder blindly, giving rise to conceptual understandings following the words, and immediately suppress and disparage Juzhi, taking this to be truly so. Little do they know that when a fired brick is struck, the freeze reaches straight to the bottom! Reaching this point, one must indeed be meticulous; strictly avoid muddled confusion. Just consider that when Juzhi was about to pass away, he said of himself: 'I obtained Tianlong's one-finger Chan, and in an entire lifetime of using it, I never exhausted it.' How could that have been in vain?
