### [16.29](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1997.16.29)

> He cited: 'A monk asked Yunmen: "Is the Buddhadharma like the moon in the water or not?" Yunmen said: "Through the clear waves there is no path." The monk said: "Where did the Venerable obtain it?" Yunmen said: "Asked again, where does it come from?" The monk said: "What about when one goes like this?" Yunmen said: "Layer upon layer of mountain passes."' The Master said: 'Clear waves for ten thousand miles, clear, still, and congealed; the jewel moon rides across the sky, its light swallowing all phenomena. This monk floated a boat into Yunmen's Dharma ocean and drew a gust of fierce wind. Looking at how he handled the rudder and spread the sail, it was not easy to withstand. Yet when it came to the end, what a pity that he lost a point. Tell me: where was the losing point? Try to discern it.'
