- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [17.30](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1997.17.30)

> \[The Master\] cited: "Nanjidai went to Xuefeng and stayed for a month before meeting Xuansha. Xuansha said: 'Only I can understand the Elder.' Nanjidai said: 'You must know there is one who does not seek to be understood.' Xuansha said: 'Why does the old fellow on the mountain peak expend so much effort?'"
> The Master critiqued: "Xuansha's release was too steep, his retrieval too swift. If it were Jinshan, it would not be so. 'This matter only I can understand; you must know there is one who does not seek to be understood'—I would simply say to him: 'I also know that the Elder does not overstep his bounds.' Do you understand thoroughly? A single arrowhead shatters three passes; clear is the path behind the arrow."
