- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [17.31](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1997.17.31)

> \[The Master\] cited: "A monk asked Baling: 'What is the Way?' Baling said: 'A clear-eyed person falling into a well.' A monk asked Shitou: 'What is the Way?' Shitou said: 'A piece of wood.' A monk also asked National Preceptor Shao: 'What is the Way?' The National Preceptor said: 'The four kinds of living beings in vast profusion.'"
> The Master critiqued: "When lineage masters act for others, each has a point of departure. If one is an adept of open ways, at a single mention one understands; but if they do not yet know one another, pointing and explaining are unavoidable. Just like one question answered this way by three people—tell me, which phrase is most intimate? Do you understand thoroughly? A single arrowhead shatters three passes; clear is the path behind the arrow."
