> He brought up \[the following case\]: "Lingyun's verse says: 'For thirty years I have been a guest seeking the sword; / how many times leaves have fallen and branches sprouted again. / Ever since seeing the peach blossoms once, / right up to now I have never doubted again.' Xuansha said: 'Thoroughly correct, most thoroughly correct, but I dare say the elder brother has not yet penetrated through.'" The Master commented: "The higher the singing, the fewer join in—the spring snow tune. The sword that kills people, the sword that brings people to life—the essential for benefiting beings. Some fellows still cling to hearing and seeing, forming understandings according to words, immediately claiming they deceive each other, who does not know this? A lonely lamp beneath the sun has already lost its prior illumination. Ultimately, where is the unpenetrated place? In the gourd, the sun and moon are long."
