> Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "Those approaching the water by the river are all people catching fish. How does one catch the brocade scales and red tails?" The Master said, "Do not have delusive thoughts." The monk continued, "What about when not having delusive thoughts?" The Master said, "Without calculating the labor, stop once you obtain it." The monk said, "'The jade pool is ten thousand fathoms deep; directly going down, one catches the fish and returns.'" The Master said, "You must take a step backward." A monk asked, "What is it like when a single dust mote contains the Dharma realm?" The Master said, "In darkness the skull brightens the world." The Master then said, "What patriarch after patriarch transmitted is this matter; what Buddha after Buddha passed down by hand is nothing other. If you retain emotional consciousness to discuss intellectual understanding, it is dust and sand in the ears, flowers in the eyes. Therefore it is said: 'Seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing are phenomena; phenomena are free from seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing.' Not clinging to Buddha, Dharma, or Sangha to seek, not returning when called, not caught in any cage or snare—you must further know the mutual rushing of staff and shout, the simultaneity of illumination and function, and the transcendent opening before you get it. And what is the transcendent opening? The crane in the ninefold marsh finds it hard to spread its wings; / A horse without thousand-mile stamina vainly chases the wind." He stepped down from the seat.
