> At the conclusion of the summer retreat, he ascended the hall and said, "The monastery of complete enlightenment flings open its doors and windows; the great seat of the Huayan kṣetra-seas faces the open porch. Shortening hundreds of thousands of myriads of kalpas into a single thought—how could it stop at a long period of one hundred and twenty days? Extending a single thought into hundreds of thousands of myriads of kalpas—how could one discuss this life and future rebirths? First one saw gold melt and rocks burn; suddenly the jade dew hangs its pearls. The seasons show no favor; the nature of things undergoes changes and returns. When the summer retreat was bound, the entire heaven and earth were bound at once; now when the retreat is lifted, the entire heaven and earth are lifted at once. When bound, originally they do not touch; when lifted, originally they do not separate. Coming to this point, opening a single thread and understanding a single dynamic: you are you, I am I, the long is long, the short is short, the pure is naturally pure, the turbid is naturally turbid. Within it there is no coming or going, nor is there movement or turning; vast and completely equal, all return to the same oneness. Thereafter, releasing, gathering, capturing, and letting loose, one attains great liberation. What more could you call you, call me, call long, call short? Sever them all at once! And how do you speak the phrase of self-indulgence? Clouds at the mountain ridge never finish being at leisure; / Water flowing down in the ravine is far too busy."
