> Ascending the hall for the conclusion of the summer retreat, he said: “Ordinary and of one taste, nothing surpasses plain simplicity; cutting off the thousand differences, one must further set the eyes high. At the place where a precipice stands ten thousand fathoms high, bare and clean; in the level fields and shallow grass, steep and perilous. Immediate peace on the spot drags through mud and water; deeply poking and painfully piercing wounds the hand and blunts the blade. If you wish the two not to obstruct each other, each please rest your mechanisms and put down your fishing rod. But how do you speak a phrase rewarding the labor of the nine summer periods? In perilous places, how could one ever forget caution? Even when walking on level ground, one must maintain defense.”
