- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [4.19](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1997.4.19)

> Ascending the hall at the opening of the stove, the Master said: "When dry grass nears the fire, it naturally chars first; when dripping water turns to ice, things have no relation to one another. If you can penetrate birth and death, understand cold and heat, fuse movement and stillness, and unify coming and going, so that your mind is directly dispelled and emotions forgotten, like an idiot, as if unmovable, only then can you eat rice when hungry, walk about when vigorous, take the cool when hot, and face the fire when cold. Even though this is so, Zhaozhou said: 'I was in the South for thirty years; I have a phrase without host or guest, yet up until now no one has been able to bring it up.' Well, how can the talk without host and guest be brought up beside the fire stove? Do you understand? Wrapping my head in a patched quilt, all affairs cease; at this moment, this mountain monk understands nothing at all."
