### [19.51](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1998a.19.51)

> When scholar-officials nowadays study the Way, most advance halfway and retreat halfway. When things do not go as they wish in worldly affairs, they urgently want to practice Chan; but when worldly affairs suddenly accord with their wishes, they immediately cease practicing, because they lack decisive faith. Chan is another name for prajñā; the Sanskrit word prajñā translates here as wisdom. If you lack decisive faith and also lack wisdom, wishing to transcend birth and death is impossible.
