> Sentient beings' daily active functioning is ignorance: if one goes along with ignorance, joy arises; if one goes against ignorance, afflictions arise. Buddhas and bodhisattvas are not like this: they borrow ignorance to perform buddha-work. Because sentient beings take ignorance as their den and dwelling, going against it would mean destroying their den and dwelling, whereas going along with it allows them to guide them according to what they are attached to. Vimalakīrti said: 'The company of worldly defilements is the seed of the Tathāgata.' Yongjia said: 'The real nature of ignorance is itself the buddha-nature; the empty body of illusory transformation is itself the dharmakāya.' It is just this principle.
