> The Buddha spoke of one hundred and twenty kinds of bodhi-mind and spoke of one hundred and twenty similes. Among them is one simile that says: 'Just as a person relies upon a king and does not fear others, the bodhisattva mahāsattva is also like this: relying on the king of great strength that is the bodhi-mind, he does not fear the difficulties of hindrances and evil paths.' In the world, there are people who get close to a supreme sovereign and do not fear others—such exists; but those willing to rely on the king of great strength that is the bodhi-mind and not fear the difficulties of hindrances and evil paths are hardly ever seen. There is also a simile that says: 'Just as when a mahānāga warrior of great strength rouses his awesome wrath, a boil inevitably grows on his forehead, and as long as the boil has not closed up, no one among all the people of Jambudvīpa can subdue him; the bodhisattva mahāsattva is also like this: if he gives rise to great compassion, he will surely arouse the bodhi-mind, and as long as this mind is not abandoned, all the māras and minions of māra in the world cannot harm him.' The two similes above are both spoken for those of great mind and power who transcend the world. Why so? These two similes are not dharmas normally found in the world, so the Buddha spoke them to inspire extraordinary, heroic individuals, wishing them to shoulder the burden of the Great Vehicle.
