> Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] cited: "A monk asked Muzhou, 'Leaving aside taking away one layer after another, what is it like when not taking away one layer after another?' Muzhou said, 'Yesterday I planted eggplants; this morning I sowed winter melons.'" The Master said, "Viewed from the highest place, it is not enough; leveled from the lowest place, it is more than sufficient. Tomorrow in the hall, everyone is free to bite through the eggplants horizontally or vertically; but is there anyone who can say a phrase about the winter melon? If you can say a phrase, monks and laypeople, sentient and insentient, will all be thoroughly sated. If you cannot say it, pay me back the rice money!"
