> Ascending the hall, he cited: "Yunmen asked Caoshan, 'What is the practice of a śramaṇa?' Caoshan said, 'One who eats the permanent property's sprouts and crops.' Yunmen said, 'What about when one goes on just like that?' Caoshan said, 'Can you still maintain it?' Yunmen said, 'This student can maintain it.' Caoshan said, 'How do you maintain it?' Yunmen said, 'Wearing clothes and eating food, what difficulty is there?' Caoshan said, 'Why not say, "Wearing fur and sporting horns"?' Yunmen bowed." The Master said: "The two venerable elders engaging in questions and answers like this could not avoid making a living inside a donkey's womb and a horse's belly. Although this is so, 'When a dog holds an imperial pardon in its mouth, the feudal lords clear the road.'"
