> Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] cited: "When Nian the Lotus-reciter and Zhen the head gardener were attending upon Fengxue, Fengxue asked Zhen, 'What is the World-Honoured One's speaking without speaking, and Kāśyapa's hearing without hearing?' Zhen said, 'The wood pigeon cries in the tree-tops; its intention lies in the hemp fields.' Fengxue said, 'Why are you making so much foolish merit? Why not investigate the words and phrases?' He then asked Nian, 'What about you?' Nian said, 'Moving about expresses the ancient path, not falling into quietistic function.' Fengxue said, 'Why don't you look at the phrase turned by Nian the Lotus-reciter?'" The Master said, "Had this mountain monk seen this old fellow speaking thus at that time, I would have dug a deep pit, buried them together at once, and furthermore led an ox to tread over them; yet I would still have had to allow Elder Zhen to stick his head out to get it right. This mountain monk's speaking this way is by no means suppressing the strong and supporting the weak, nor is it a fabricated contrivance. If you recognise 'The wood pigeon cries in the tree-tops; its intention lies in the hemp fields,' then you will recognise 'Moving about expresses the ancient path, not falling into quietistic function.' Are these two turning words ultimately one or two? If you say they are one, why did Fengxue only approve Nian the Lotus-reciter and not approve Zhen the head gardener? If you say they are two, what can be done about 'The sunset glow and solitary duck fly side by side; autumn waters and the vast sky are of one colour'? Examine it!"
