> Ascending the hall, he cited: "Dongshan asked Hermitage Master Sanfeng: 'What is your name?' The master said: 'Daoying.' Dongshan said: 'Why do you not speak toward what is beyond?' The master said: 'If I spoke toward what is beyond, I would not be named Daoying.' Dongshan deeply approved of him." The Master said: "If Daoying speaks toward what is beyond, he is not named Daoying; since he is not named Daoying, it is impermissible to call it the place beyond. Since it is not speaking toward what is beyond, how do you tally with Dongshan's meaning?" After a long pause, he said: "The wise hearing a bit vigorously take hold; / Do not wait for an instant and lose your head."
