> Instructing the assembly, he cited: "A non-Buddhist asked the Buddha, 'I do not ask about what has words, nor do I ask about what is wordless.' The World-Honoured One remained silent for a long time. The non-Buddhist praised him, saying, 'The World-Honoured One with great loving-kindness and great compassion has opened my clouds of delusion and enabled me to enter.' After the non-Buddhist left, Ānanda asked the Buddha, 'What did the non-Buddhist realize that he spoke of having entered?' The World-Honoured One said, 'Like a fine horse in the world, running at the mere shadow of the whip.' Xuedou said, 'Heterodox and orthodox are not distinguished; the fault lies in the shadow of the whip.'" The Master said, "Heterodox and orthodox are both distinguished; it is precisely due to the shadow of the whip."
