> Chan Master Dongshan Bao was a dharma heir of Master Wuzu Jie. He was a native of Luzhou, pure and cautious in character, and once served as monastic officer at Wuzu. When Jie was ill, he ordered an attendant to go to the storehouse to get fresh ginger to decoct medicine; Bao scolded him. The attendant reported to Jie, and Jie ordered him to take money to buy it back; only then did Bao take the ginger and give it to him. Later, Dongshan in Junzhou lacked an abbot, and the commandery governor sent a letter entrusting Jie to recommend an acquaintance to head it. Jie said, "The ginger-selling fellow can reside there." He then assumed the abbacy and resided at Dongshan. Later he moved to reside at Guizong. One day, leaning on a staff, he went out the gate and saw a clearance crier approaching. He asked, "What official?" The runner said, "The county defender," ordering him to clear the road. Bao stood aside on the left of the road to avoid him. Suddenly he saw the horse kneel down and refuse to walk. Bao said, "The beast actually recognizes people." The defender realized it was Bao, bowed twice, and departed. He moved again to Yunju. One night the mountain spirit carried a palanquin around the monastery; Bao said, "Carry your father, carry your mother, carry it up to the abbot's quarters!" The spirit carried it back to the abbot's quarters. When Bao was first traveling on foot, he once lodged at an inn and was pressed by a courtesan, so he yielded the couch to let her sleep. Bao sat in meditation until daybreak. The courtesan demanded lodging money; Bao gave it to her, went out the door, burned the bedding himself, and departed. The courtesan told her parents about Bao, so they invited him back and offered a vegetarian feast to apologize, calling him a true son of the Buddha. He once composed a eulogy on Patriarch Bodhidharma, which was widely circulated in the monastic groves; Master Langya Jue matched its rhymes, and it is now recorded in the Zhengfayanzang. A monk asked the Master, "I cannot succeed in investigating Chan; I wonder where the illness lies?" The Master said, "The illness lies right here." The monk said, "Why is it that I cannot succeed in investigating?" The Master said, "You fellow who wets the bed with eyes wide open, I will beat you away!"
