> Li Shanglao of Mount Lu offended the earth spirits due to construction work, and his entire family fell ill with swelling. Seeking doctors brought no effect, so he thoroughly swept the chambers and halls, ordered each of his kin to purify their minds, and burned incense and recited the Dhāraṇī of Blazing Light to ward off what they had offended. Before seven days had passed, he dreamed at night of an old man in white riding an ox in his house, and suddenly the ground sank and he was gradually swallowed up; the next day, old and young were all without illness. When utmost sincerity moves \[things\], it is as swift as a shadow or an echo—could it be like this were it not for the Buddha's power?
