> Ascending the seat, offering incense, and concluding the prayers for the emperor, he gathered his robes and took his seat. A monk asked: "The cinnabar edict from the ninefold palace descends from the cloud tops; the auspicious vapors blend harmoniously, and the universe is vast. Bringing forth the flute without holes from Shaolin, we rely on the master to blow up the joy of ten thousand years." The Master said: "Incense smoke curls upward from the censer; auspicious vapors coil in the void." The monk advanced and said: "Squeezing out empty space to make an ocean of blessings, turning Mount Sumeru around to serve as a mountain of longevity." The Master said: "Not beyond one's lot." The monk advanced and said: "When Sansheng said, 'Whenever I meet someone I come out, but when I come out I do not act for the sake of the person,' how is it?" The Master said: "Check." The monk advanced and said: "Press." The Master said: "Do not fabricate." The monk advanced and said: "Opening wide like the character eight." The Master said: "From which gate do you enter?" The monk gave a shout. The Master said: "I almost let you pass without questioning." The monk advanced and said: "When Xinghua said, 'Whenever I meet someone I do not come out, but when I come out I act for the sake of the person,' how is it?" The Master said: "Repeated words do not warrant being eaten." The monk advanced and said: "I cannot deceive the Venerable in the least." The Master said: "Jump about as you will." The monk bowed. The Master then said: "The utmost transformation is impartial, universally responding throughout the great chiliocosm. The imperial favor extends far and wide, giving birth to spring in the rocky valleys. Thunder moves and wind sweeps; dragons leap and tigers dash. Immeasurable superior wonders gather together, and marvelous meanings like the sands of the Ganges are fully manifested. Without passing through the conjured city, one ascends straight to the place of jewels. Having reached the place of jewels, whatever conditions one encounters become the ancestral lineage. Dharma follows Dharma's practice; the Dharma banner is erected everywhere. Shifting steps and changing strides, object and self are as one. Each does not know the other; dharma does not reach dharma. And tell me, how do you express a single phrase dedicating the whole body?" After a long pause, he said: "In heaven, all stars pay homage to the North Star; among men, no water does not flow toward the east."
