> Upon entering the monastery, ascending the hall, a monk asked: "In the ocean of the Flower Storehouse, casting a great net, you are accustomed to catching giant leviathans; atop the Peak Reaching to the Heavens, grasping the tongs and hammer, you forge buddhas and patriarchs. Now that the forge has opened, what about when one stroke of the hammer finishes it?" The Master said: "The lacquered tub radiates light." The monk continued: "In that case, the Venerable is indeed a skilled hand." The Master said: "Do not bring clumsy disgrace upon me." The monk continued: "A monk asked Venerable Ying'an: 'Leaving Guangxiao far behind to come to Miaoyan, what is the Immovable Honoured One?' Ying'an said: 'Parting from the Lotus City is five days' journey.' What was the meaning?" The Master said: "Every step treads on solid ground." The monk continued: "Since he is the Immovable Honoured One, why was there a five days' journey?" The Master said: "It pierces the nostrils of everyone under heaven." The monk continued: "Leaving the Flower Storehouse far behind to come to Jingshan, what is the Immovable Honoured One?" The Master said: "Walking on foot." The monk continued: "Formerly Ying'an, today the Venerable." The Master said: "This old monk does not know Ying'an." The monk continued: "Today how can you conceal it again?" The Master said: "I have been closely scrutinized by the elder monk." The monk bowed. The Master then said: "Before arriving here, it indeed made people have doubts; yet upon arriving, as before the gate opens wide in the shape of the character eight. The pavilions touch the sky, driving Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra as servants, hurrying Śākya and Maitreya on errands. Picking up one and letting go of one, the grass bends before the wind; citing one to clarify three, taking measure with the flick of an eye. Like a mirror reflecting a mirror, like space concealing space; where there is a buddha, smash the cangues and break the locks; where there is no buddha, spot the hare and loose the falcon. If suddenly it were not like this at all, how would you convey the news?" After a long pause, he said: "The clouds are still, the sun and moon are aligned; the snow has cleared, heaven and earth are spring."
