> Ascending the seat, after offering incense and praying for the Emperor, he gathered his robes and sat down. A monk asked: "The red edict comes from the Phoenix Palace; auspicious vapor pervades the Chan monastery. For the unselfish phrase of Shaoshi, we pray that you will reveal it in response to the moment."
> The Master said: "The radiant sun is in the sky."
> The monk continued: "Ten thousand states sing of Shun's transformation; a thousand ages celebrate Yao's years."
> The Master said: "Completely exhausting the heart of this moment."
> The monk continued: "The Pacification Commissioner's document states: 'The marvelous peak of Tianmu at Jingshan has long presided over the Dharma seat; for the superb scenery of Qiantang at Lingyin, we wish to obtain you as leader.' Tell me, is dwelling at Lingyin better, or dwelling at Jingshan better?"
> The Master said: "A single drop of water and ink forms dragons in two places."
> The monk continued: "Soldiers turn according to the seal; generals march following the tally."
> The Master said: "You must cut off your heels before you get it."
> The monk continued: "Then the straw sandals are hung high on the corner of the dragon couch, sitting to shake Feilai's foremost peak."
> The Master said: "Before the sound and after the phrase, gathered in at once."
> The Master then said: "When one place penetrates, a thousand places, a hundred places penetrate all at once; when one place breaks through, a thousand places, a hundred places break through all at once. It is like opening an armory: brightly glittering in cross-radiance; again, it is like a great blazing mass of fire: gaze at it, and it scorches your face off. When like this, if you abide in squareness, it is square; if you encounter roundness, it is round. Pick up a blade of grass and make it a sixteen-foot golden body; pick up a sixteen-foot golden body and make it a blade of grass. Cut off emotional dust and conceptual thoughts; do not fall into seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing. Tapping and singing proceed together; the ten directions of emptiness are thoroughly open. And tell me, how do you express the phrase of shifting the body and changing steps? A balmy breeze arises beyond the threshold; the white sun circles Sumeru."
