- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.165](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1999.1.165)

> Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] said, "If there is a single phrase, when it reaches you all, your tongues are cut off. If there is not a single phrase, when it reaches you all, you are left completely free to \[lie\] horizontal in threes and vertical in fours. Not getting involved in the two paths, even the Buddha's eye finds it difficult to peer into. When meeting on a narrow path, holding the whip and turning the head back—I do not ask you all about that. But what about when Zhaozhou arrived at Zhuyu, gently leaned his staff \[against the wall\], and immediately walked out—what was the meaning of that?"
> Giving a shout, he said, "Where Yu's strength did not reach, the sound of the Yellow River flows west."
