- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.170](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1999.1.170)

> Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] said, "Exhausting all profound eloquence and draining the worldly mechanism is merely adding more rubbish on top of a heap of sweepings. Fitting openly and matching secretly, when the water arrives the ditch is formed; a thief's heart is timid, embracing the stolen goods and crying foul. Deshan's stick falls like drops of rain; Linji's shout is like rushing thunder—this is precisely raising weapons on level ground and acting as a spy in a time of peace. Patchrobed monks have a living road that the thousand sages have never trodden; the land is broad and people are scarce."
> Suddenly picking up his staff, he said, "This staff is sharp and nimble, adept at discerning subtle clues."
> He then threw it down and said, "Fine days are mostly the same."
