- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.182](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1999.1.182)

> When a letter arrived from Drafter-in-waiting Zhang Yuezhai, \[the Master\] ascended the hall: "Buddhas hand it to buddhas, and patriarchs transmit it to patriarchs; not blinded by seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing, the patchrobed monk's handle stands out boldly. When the wind blows, the grass bends; when the water arrives, the ditch is formed. Like holding the Tai'e sword in hand with awe-inspiring divine power, who dares peer straight at it? Therefore, all buddhas appear in the world through this; the ancestral teacher came from the West through this; heaven and earth cover and support through this; the sun, moon, and stars shine through this; heavenly halls and hells divide good and evil through this; the four sages and six ordinarinesses bob up and down through this; and patchrobed monks wield the tongs and hammer of the direct path beyond through this, smashing the old ruts of the sacred and the profane. When the old ruts are exhausted, one directly has nothing to look up to above and no bending or bowing below; the constant light appears before one, standing like a wall ten thousand fathoms high. Just at such a time, how does one meet with Yuezhai?"
> After a long pause, he said, "In the shadow of the blade's edge, black and white are distinguished; the nostrils still hang down over the upper lip."
> He further spoke a verse, saying:
> "Dwelling amidst wealth and nobility,
> Not misled by wealth and nobility,
> With bare hands pushing open the gate of liberation,
> Striding alone in all eight directions.
> The buddhas and patriarchs do not know its reason;
> Relying on whom could a foundation be established?
> Bah, bah, bah! Li-wa-xi!
> Hearing, seeing, perceiving, and knowing all join palms;
> An iron ox gives birth to a phoenix child."
