> Ascending the hall: "If you can leap out from the quiet and secluded place, you can lay yourself down in the bustling and noisy place; if you can push through in the bustling and noisy place, you can plant your feet in the quiet and secluded place. Therefore, Deshan relied on a single plain staff: when a Buddha came, he struck; when a patriarch came, he struck. Furthermore, he did not sit in the bustling and noisy place or the quiet and secluded place, yet he said: 'For thirty years I have never struck one who is uniquely free.' If there were one who is uniquely free under Xiangfu's gate, it would be just the right time to call him over to wash my feet."
