> Ascending the hall, he cited: "In the Sutra of Complete Enlightenment it says: 'At all times do not give rise to deluded thoughts; toward deluded states of mind do not extinguish them; dwelling in realms of delusion, do not add discerning understanding; in the absence of discerning understanding, do not distinguish true reality.' Venerable Xuetang brought this up and said: 'Withered trees: clouds serve as leaves; withered plum blossoms: snow serves as flowers. Striking the bamboo tube, square wood sounds; dipping in snow, one eats winter melon. Limitless sky, autumn waters; a solitary wild duck and evening glow.'" The Master said: "Old man Śākya carried out a load of confusion, and bumping into Venerable Xuetang, added another load of muddlement. Xiangfu is not oppressing the good into the base, but wishes to have black and white clearly distinguished. Casting an ox head from raw iron, pulling the plow and dragging the harrow. The wise laugh cheerfully; the foolish are startled and puzzled. From ancient times to the present, several hundred years—again posting hexagrams upon the ghost gate!" Suddenly picking up his staff, he said: "Look, look! Old man Śākya comes! He says to all of you: 'Seizing the tiger's head and catching the tiger's tail, clarify the ancestral purpose under the very first phrase!'" Striking the staff once, he descended from the seat.
