> The Master then said: "In the past, the Great Being Mañjuśrī spent the summer in three places: one month at an elder's house, one month in Māra's palace, and one month in a brothel. At the end, he returned to the Bhagavat's assembly to conclude the retreat. Kāśyapa wished to strike the mallet to expel him. Just as the thought arose, he saw immeasurable Bhagavats, immeasurable Kāśyapas, and immeasurable Mañjuśrīs. The Bhagavat said: 'Which Mañjuśrī do you wish to expel?' Kāśyapa exhausted his spiritual power, but the mallet could not be lifted. Later, an elder master brought this up, saying: 'Such a fine strike of the mallet was let pass; willingly acting as a Hinayānist.'" The Master said: "The elder master acting like this was also a blind man feeling an elephant. Senior Monk Jie this summer entered the summer retreat at Jiangshan, broke the summer retreat at Baochan, and completed the summer retreat at Huazang. Tell me, is this the same as or different from Mañjuśrī? If you say it is the same, I grant that he possesses a single eye; if you say it is different, I also grant that he possesses a single eye. If someone who is not deceived by others suddenly comes forth and says: 'The abbot is quite good at stirring up muddy water,' I would just say to him: 'In the muddy water there is a place of clarity; listen closely at once! Shifting sites three times determines right and wrong; the stubborn mind does not change in the slightest. Barbarian words or Han speech—who can understand? Even iron foreheads and bronze skulls knit their brows.'"
