虛堂和尚語錄 1.175

- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.175](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2000.1.175)

上堂，舉：「白雲瑞和尚示眾：『古人留下一言半句，未透時撞著鐵壁相似，忽然一日透去，方知自己便是鐵壁。且道，如今作麼生透？』乃云：『鐵壁鐵壁。』」師云：「白雲恐人不會，只管依文解義。衲僧家，融萬象於目前，摶虛空於掌上，猶是轉句，況那邊事耶。」

> Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] cited: "Upādhyāya Baiyun Rui addressed the assembly: 'The ancients left behind a word or half a phrase. When you have not penetrated it, it is like striking against an iron wall; suddenly, one day you penetrate it, and only then do you realize that you yourself are the iron wall. Tell me, how do you penetrate it right now?' He then said: 'Iron wall, iron wall!'"
> The Master said: "Baiyun feared people would not understand, so he merely explained the meaning according to the letter. As for patch-robed monks, to fuse the myriad forms before their eyes and knead empty space upon their palms is still just a turning phrase—how much more so the matter of that other side!"
