> The master gathered his robes, took his seat, and called for questions: "Humans and devas meet and both behold each other; is there anyone who does not accept words and does not linger over phrases?" At that time a monk asked: "Uniformly carrying a board incurs people's dislike; for ten years in deep clouds you shut your gate alone. Today in the great monastery you personally receive the imperial decree; this master's medicinal herb is truly potent. Coming forward, this student requests the master to offer blessings for the Emperor." The master said: "Clouds are still, the sun and moon are high." The monk said: "Of old, Brahma invited the Buddha on behalf of the multitude of beings; today the Sacred Ruler specially sends an emissary—what auspicious omen is there?" The master said: "Heaven is high and cannot be fully covered." The monk said: "In that case, the four assemblies receive the bounty." The master said: "Who does not receive the bounty?" The monk said: "Just as the Prefect, Defense Commissioner, and Vice Minister Academician, with the way of loyalty, uprightness, firmness, and greatness, chose a person for the sake of the Dharma—would you allow this student to borrow water to offer flowers?" The master said: "Before Kāśyapa's gate, the wind blows chillingly." The monk said: "If so, your fame will fill the world." The master said: "You must not forget it." The monk bowed.
