> Ascending the hall, he cited: "Zhaozhou asked a monk, 'Where have you come from?' The monk said, 'Xuefeng.' Zhaozhou said, 'What phrases did Xuefeng instruct disciples with recently?' The monk said, 'The Great Master said: "The entire great earth is a single eye of a śramaṇa; where are all of you going to defecate?"' Zhaozhou said, 'Did anyone give a reply?' The monk said, 'No one yet.' Zhaozhou said, 'If you cross the mountain pass, send a shovel for me.'" The Master said: "Zhaozhou traded a sweet peach for a sour pear. If someone asks Jingci, 'What phrases do you instruct disciples with?' I would only say to him: 'You have good nerve asking me; if you asked someone else, they would hit your mouth askew.'"
