> Ascending the hall on the first of the month, and also thanking Elder Ziyan. A monk asked: "The sun and moon illumine the imperial virtue; the mountains and rivers strengthen the sovereign's abode. As this student comes forward, I ask the master to pray for the Emperor." The master said: "Nests know the wind; caves know the rain." The monk said: "Today Upādhyāya Jingyan has arrived; how will you receive him?" The master said: "When the tea and broth are finished, send him back to the guest quarters." The monk said: "If so, then the reception is excessively diligent." The master said: "You must not come here tossing your lips and tongue around." The monk said: "I recall that when Daodao Quan came to visit Ciming, Ming said: 'A single cloud stretches across the mouth of the valley; from where has the wanderer come?' Quan said: 'Whence came the fire last night, burning open an ancient one's grave?' What is the meaning of this?" The master said: "Kicking at heaven and playing in the well invites people's resentment." The monk said: "Ciming also said: 'Not yet; speak further.' Quan then made the sound of a tiger. What about this?" The master said: "Money leaves an urgent house." The monk said: "Just as for the upādhyāya, today leaving aside words and phrases, how do you meet with people?" The master said: "Rank entangling vines cannot be pulled apart." The monk said: "I am glad to understand your words." The master said: "Discourse that grates upon the ear."
