> Ascending the hall on Mid-Autumn, a monk asked: "When Hanshan saw the moon tonight, why did he clap his hands and laugh loudly?" The Master said: "Sand cannot be put into the eye; water cannot be put into the ear." The monk said: "Is there anyone who laughs tonight or not?" The Master said: "Even if there is a dagger hidden in the smile, one must still examine it." The monk said: "I recall that when Great Master Mazu was enjoying the moon, he said: 'At just such a time, what about it?' Xitang said: 'Just right for making offerings.' What does this mean?" The Master said: "An inch-long nail driven into wood." The monk said: "Baizhang said: 'Just right for cultivating practice.' What about that?" The Master said: "Before the gates of hell, a ghost sheds its seal." The monk said: "Nanquan shook his sleeves and walked away. What does this mean?" The Master said: "Only because his pace was too swift, he did not notice his whole body covered in mud and water." The monk said: "Tell me, among the words of the three elders, is there any superiority or inferiority?" The Master said: "How much do you tire of Master Mazu's colorful silk?" The monk said: "Master Mazu also said: 'The scriptures return to Zang, Chan returns to Hai, only Puyuan alone transcends beyond things.' What about that?" The Master said: "Beneath the cliff, wind arises and a tiger plays with its cub." The monk bowed. The Master said: "Bowing is permissible."
