> Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] cited: "A monk asked Dongshan, 'When a deceased monk passes away, where does he go?' Dongshan said, 'After the fire, a single stalk of cogon grass.'" The Master said: "Vacuous and numinous, empty and wondrous. A single point of radiance is the pivot of sentient beings and buddhas; opening through the ten directions, it is the dwelling cave of sages and worldlings. Do you understand?" After a long pause, he said: "Lamentable that on the day of departure the countenance was like jade; yet sighing that upon return the temples are like frost."
