- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.96](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2001.1.96)

> The Master accepted an invitation from the Yuantong Chongsheng Monastery in Jiangzhou. Ascending the hall, he took up his staff, showed it to the assembly, and said: "Good Chan practitioners! The staff of a patch-robed monk: in stillness it is behind everyone; in motion it is before everyone. Entirely because it does not touch the two extremes, it is therefore able to respond to all transformations. Virtuous practitioners, tell me: when responding to all transformations, what face does it present? Do you understand? The tiger squats and the dragon coils, their momentum never ceasing; / Cloud shadows and mountain forms coldly face each other." Having finished expressing gratitude, he again cited: "Jiashan instructed the assembly, saying: 'This old monk has set up an examination ground at the head of the ancient road. If one approaches alone, I let them pass. If one is a person of the midst, there is a different road. Venerable, there is no phenomenon before your eyes; the intention is before your eyes. That is not a phenomenon before your eyes; it is not reached by ears or eyes.'" The Master said: "Jiashan can be said to buy cheap and sell dear, transforming the raw into the cooked, right before the face. Do you understand? Water flowing beside the bamboo emerges green; / Wind passing through the flowers brings fragrance."
