- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [3.48](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2001.3.48)

> \[The Master\] cited: Baishui offered the phrase, saying: “Sand cannot be put into the eye; water cannot be put into the ear.” A monk then asked: “What is ‘sand cannot be put into the eye’?” Baishui said: “The Arhat is incomparable.” The monk said: “What is ‘water cannot be put into the ear’?” Baishui said: “Pure white and without defilement.”
> The Master said: “Old man Baishui may be called great without an outside, small without an inside, fully endowed with a thousand transformations and ten thousand changes; just this bare-handed and empty-bodied, not admitting a single drop or a single dust mote, directly filling the eyes and filling the ears. Do you still see? Where one sets foot there is no leisure ground; how many people know the mind?”
