> Ascending the hall at the conclusion of the summer retreat, a monk asked: 'An ancient said: "Gathering together from the ten directions, each and every one learns non-action. This is the field for selecting Buddhas; the mind empty, passing the exam, one returns." How is it at just such a time?' The Master said, 'Pure and completely exhausted, with nothing to rely on; throughout the whole body, no separation.' The monk said, 'Then a commoner bows and departs.' The Master said, 'Again you take a stance toward the present moment.' The monk said, 'How can one not fall into the present moment?' The Master said, 'Transcending beyond the kalpa of emptiness, a single point is naturally luminous.' The monk said, 'Does this person still fall into stages or not?' The Master said, 'From the beginning, no forms are established; in this place, do not set up names.' The Master then said: The mirror image and the valley spirit, the cloud mind and the moon's reflection: / At leisure, exercising no mastership over function; distinct, without selfishness in response. / Do not ask about upright and biased; who discusses movement and stillness? / Naturally square, naturally round; who lacks, who has excess? / Able to come and walk among different species, constantly abiding in the great samādhi of the nāga. / People of spontaneous release in the cloud-and-water monastic groves: if it is truly like this, you must congratulate one another.
