> Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] cited: "A monk asked Great Master Yunmen, 'What is the talk that transcends Buddhas and ancestors?' Yunmen said, 'Sesame cake.'" The Master said: "Old Yunmen was skilled at setting it forth: / Sesame cake, Buddhas, and ancestors are all transcended. / Babbling and muttering with two skin flaps, / Gibbering and jabbering with a three-inch tongue. / It is not deliberately displaying the family style, / Nor is it matching the capacity to meet the season. / Cast of pig iron into a holeless hammer, / So completely round, it's hard to drive in a wedge. / Venerable Chan practitioners, tell me: does Tiantong drive in a wedge today or not? Let clear-eyed people discern it!"
