> Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "I recall that a monk asked Fengxue: 'Speech and silence involve transcendence and subtlety; how can one penetrate without transgression?' Fengxue said: 'I always remember Jiangnan in the third month; where the partridge cries, the hundred flowers are fresh.' What is the meaning of this?"
> The Master said: "Asked about the east, he answered about the west; the tongue has no bone."
> The monk said: "Was not Fengxue a fellow who discerned opportunities and recognized good and bad fortune?"
> The Master said: "Then you tell me: what was Fengxue's meaning?"
> The monk said: "A jade parrot fashioned of yellow gold, cry after cry calling like a partridge."
> The Master said: "Just now it was complete, but now it is smashed to pieces."
> The monk said: "To make it complete is not difficult."
> The Master said: "If winter is not cold, see after the twelfth month."
> The Master then said: "Desolate, at the very inception before a single thought sprouts: can you discern whether the bare pillar is pregnant or not? The wind sweeps away remaining clouds, the moon has not yet risen; the clear sky is vast and clean, devoid of directions and corners. The Way has no root, the spirit has no lodging; the mind has no image, wisdom has no conditions. Standing solitary and towering without dependence, everything is self-illumined and numinous. To take the myriad things as oneself—is that not only the sage? Right at such a time, how do you experience and understand it? Do you understand? The moon follows the boat's travel, the river is like pure white silk; spring follows the grass, green on the burned traces."
