> Ascending the hall, he cited: A monk asked Xiangyan, "What is the Way?" Xiangyan said, "A dragon roaring within a withered tree." "What is the person of the Way?" "An eyeball within a skull." The Master said: The ear responds to sound without resonance; the eye reflects while discarding conditions. The pure rules of boundless kalpas are perfected right therein. A place where birth and death, death and birth do not reach: clouds polish the autumn hues, and waters meet the sky.
