- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [4.253](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2001.4.253)

> A novice requested \[an address\]. Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] brought up: A monk asked Master Rang: "Just as a mirror casts an image: after the image is formed, where does the brightness return?"
> Rang said: "Just as when you, Virtuous One, were a child, where did your appearance go?"
> The Master said: "Just this is it. Neither image nor mirror; who is host and who is guest? What is biased and what is upright? The hole-less mallet cannot deceive me with seams or cracks; the star-less steelyard cannot fix me by drachms or grains." Suddenly picking up his staff, he made a stirring gesture and said: "I casually take the staff to stir the vast ocean, making those fish and dragons know that water is their life."
